What Happens if It Rains After Exterior Painting?

I'm Chad Heisman, founder of Precision Paintworks. After serving in the military, I built this company in 2021 on a pretty simple idea: your home deserves the same care I'd give my own.
I run a veteran and family-owned painting crew right here in Maryland that has successfully completed over 500 painting projects so far. Got a question about your place? Ask me. I'd rather help you get it right the first time than sell you anything.

A light shower on paint that has set is usually fine. What happens if it rains after exterior painting depends on how long the paint has had to dry: rain on wet paint can wash it, leave streaks or runs, or trap moisture that later shows up as bubbles or peeling.

The usual fix is to let the wall dry and recoat the affected area. At Precision Paintworks we stop work on exposed walls when rain threatens, check any wall a shower reached, and recoat what was affected, following the drying times for the paint we use.

What Rain Does to Fresh Paint

Rain on set paint beads up and runs off. Rain on wet paint is the problem, because it can wash the surface, leave trails, or get trapped under the film.

A blue-sided home we finished in May 2026 shows the good case. The last coat went on by early afternoon, and a light shower arrived that evening. The water beaded on the siding and trim and the finish stayed intact, because the paint had already set and the shower was light.

How Long Does Exterior Paint Need to Dry Before Rain?

There is no honest universal number. It depends on the product, the temperature, the humidity and the dew point, so we work from the product’s own figures. For the Sherwin-Williams Emerald Exterior Acrylic Latex used on that blue home, the published drying times are 1 hour to touch and 4 hours to recoat at 45°F and up and 50% humidity. Between 35°F and 45°F, that becomes 2 hours to touch and 24 to 48 hours to recoat. The same sheet says to avoid applying it if rain is expected within 2 to 3 hours, and to paint only when the surface is at least 5°F above the dew point.

Those are the manufacturer’s figures for one product, not a promise for every wall. We add margin: we do not start a wall late in the day when rain is likely overnight.

Before we paint or resume on wet-looking wood, we check it with a moisture meter and wait until the reading is in the range we work to.

How to Tell if Rain Damaged Fresh Paint

Look for drip trails, streaks, spotting, patches that look duller or glossier than the rest, and any spot that feels soft or tacky. Check where water collects or runs: the faces of columns and trim, ledges and the tops of windows. Side light, early or late in the day, shows problems that midday sun hides.

At a stucco home with white porch columns in April 2026, the last coat on one column went on late in the day. Heavy rain overnight reached it before it set, and by morning drip trails ran down the face.

Streaks or Bubbles on Exterior Paint After Rain

Streaks and runs come from rain hitting paint that has not set. Bubbles come from moisture trapped under the film, and rain and dew can cause these moisture blisters. Blisters should be left to dry for a few days before anyone decides what to do.

For that column, we let it dry, checked it, sanded the streaks smooth and recoated the affected area.

How Soon After Rain Can You Paint a House?

Once the surface is dry, and not before. We plan weather days into every exterior painting schedule.

On a brick home in March 2026, the forecast showed rain by midday. We stopped on the exposed front, taped plastic over the fresh door and trim, and moved the crew to the sheltered back. Once the rain passed, we checked the front window trim on that same brick home with a moisture meter. It read 12%, so we went back to work on that wall.

What to Do the Day After

Leave the wall alone. Do not wipe, scrub or pressure wash it, because fresh paint can still be soft. Take dated photos from a few feet away in side light, note where, and call us if you see streaks, spots or bubbles.

Who Pays if Rain Damages a Paint Job?

We are not liable for delays when rain or wind makes the work unsafe or impractical, and rework caused by weather outside our control goes through a change order. A defect is different: if rain hits paint because we applied it too late in the day or too soon after a coat, the recoat is on us under our 3-year workmanship warranty.

Questions to Ask Your Painter About Rain

  1. What dry time do you work to before rain for the product you are using?
  2. Which forecast do you check, and when?
  3. What do you do on the exposed side of the house when rain is coming?
  4. How do you check that a wall is dry before you resume?
  5. What happens if rain hits fresh paint?
  6. Who pays for the recoat, and where is that written?
  7. How does the 3-year workmanship warranty treat weather damage?
  8. How do weather delays change the schedule or price?

FAQ

Does a light drizzle ruin new paint?

Not necessarily. Light drizzle on set paint usually does no harm, but drizzle on wet paint can leave spots or streaks. Check the product’s own figures for the rain window, and call us before touching the wall.

What if it rains overnight after the last coat?

It depends on how long the paint had to set first. We check the walls the next morning and recoat what was affected. Leave the wall alone until we have looked.

Does morning dew count the same as rain?

Not quite, but it matters. Dew leaves a film of moisture on the surface, so we wait until the wall is dry and keep the surface at least 5°F above the dew point, which is what the product’s data sheet calls for.

Can I wash or touch the wall after rain?

No, not until we have checked it. Fresh paint can still be soft, and rubbing or washing it can smear the finish.

Can rain change the color of new exterior paint?

Rain on wet paint can leave blotchy patches or an uneven sheen where it washed. Once recoated, the finish should even out.
