Can You Stay in Your House While It’s Being Painted? A Maryland Guide

I'm Chad Heisman, founder of Precision Paintworks. After serving in the military, I built this company in 2021 on a pretty simple idea: your home deserves the same care I'd give my own.
I run a veteran and family-owned painting crew right here in Maryland that has successfully completed over 500 painting projects so far. Got a question about your place? Ask me. I'd rather help you get it right the first time than sell you anything.

Yes, you can stay in your house while it’s being painted. Usually, a crew can work one room or floor at a time, keep the kitchen, a bathroom and a bed available, and ventilate as it goes. The main exceptions are homes built before 1978 where lead-safe work is needed, sprayed finishes or strong-odor products, and household members with breathing sensitivities, who should ask their doctor.

At Precision Paintworks we phase interior work so the family keeps a usable bathroom, kitchen and bedroom each night, using low-odor paint lines.

What a Day Looks Like When You Stay

One whole-interior project we finished recently went one floor at a time. The crew arrived around 8:00 a.m. and wrapped up by 4:30 p.m. The family kept the kitchen, one bathroom and their beds every night.

Before leaving each day, we vacuumed, pulled the tape and handed back every room that was dry to the touch. That room-by-day plan is the first thing to ask for when you book interior painting in an occupied home.

How Painters Protect Furniture and Floors

Look at this living room: the furniture is grouped in the center under plastic, the hardwood is covered in paper with taped seams, and there is a clear path to the next room. That is our standard setup. Your part is small: clear shelves, counters and anything fragile or sentimental before we arrive, and pack away what you cannot replace.

How Long Do Paint Fumes Last?

The strongest smell comes while the paint goes on and dries. Paint releases volatile organic compounds, so we open windows and run fans to push air outside while we work, and we use low-odor lines from Sherwin-Williams, such as SuperPaint, and Benjamin Moore. Most rooms are usable the same evening once dry to the touch. Our typical timelines call for waiting 2 to 3 days before pushing furniture back against the walls.

Can You Sleep in a Freshly Painted Room?

Often, yes, once the room is dry to the touch and aired out. This green bedroom went back to the family the same evening, bed made, window open and a fan on the floor keeping the air moving.

If the room still smells strong at bedtime, sleep somewhere else for a night. Anyone with asthma or another breathing condition, or who is pregnant, should check with their doctor first.

Painting a House With Kids and Pets at Home

A hallway gate and a taped plastic door kept one family’s dog out of the work zone during a recent project. Paint, ladders and tools stayed inside that zone, out of reach, and doors stayed closed between rooms. The family and crew agreed on quiet hours around nap time.

Working From Home While Your House Is Painted

A household’s home office stayed clear and usable behind a taped plastic door. We saved the loudest prep for days that room was not in use and left a quiet window for calls. If you work from home, tell us your meeting days up front so we can build the schedule around them.

When We Would Say Leave

Older homes are different. This one, built before 1978, got full plastic containment, protected floors and a shop vacuum with bagged debris, because the prep disturbed old paint. We recommended the family stay with relatives while the containment was up. Homes built before that year may have lead paint, so hire a lead-safe certified contractor, as we are. We would also say leave for sprayed cabinet finishes, strong-odor products, or when someone in the home has breathing sensitivities. Ask your doctor.

Questions to Ask Your Painter Before Booking

  1. Will you work room by room or floor by floor, and which rooms do I keep each night?
  2. What time do you start and finish each day?
  3. What do you cover and move, and what should I clear?
  4. Which paint lines do you use, and are they low-odor?
  5. How will you ventilate while you work?
  6. What is the plan for my kids, pets or home office?
  7. If my home was built before 1978, are you certified to work safely around lead paint?
  8. Will the plan and the 3-year workmanship warranty be in writing?

FAQ

Do I have to leave during exterior painting?

Usually not. The work happens outside, so you can stay in. We ask you to keep windows closed on the side we are working and move cars and patio items out of the way.

Can I stay if cabinets are being painted or sprayed?

Brushed and rolled cabinet finishes are easier to live with. Spraying puts fine mist and stronger odor in the air, so we usually recommend being away that day. Ask for the plan in writing.

Do I need to open windows or run fans?

We do it for you. We open windows and run fans where the weather allows. If you are home, a little extra airing in the evening helps.

What if someone in the house has asthma or is pregnant?

Ask your doctor first. We can adjust the schedule, work one room at a time and talk through product choices, but the medical call is theirs.

Can I keep my kitchen and a bathroom during the project?

Yes. We plan the order so the kitchen and at least one bathroom stay usable each night, and we paint those last.
